Fore!

So our friend, Jenny, asked us to help her with a cake for her aunt's husband's birthday. He is an avid golfer, so she knew that was the theme to go with. She came over and we spent our Saturday morning (and most of the afternoon) making this cake.

Sachin made the delicious moist chocolate cake and we put a layer of marzipan between the two cake layers. Then, we iced it with a delicious almond buttercream. We dyed the same icing and made a grass border along the bottom of the cake.

Jenny jumped right in and was a natural.

My favourite part was making the little golf bag.

Fondant Fever

So one of Joanne's co-workers, D, went to a wedding, a couple of weeks ago. Since then, she's been raving about how delicious fondant is.

As a treat, Joanne decided to bring some cupcakes to the office and instead of just icing them with regular icing, we went with a simple, but elegant, fondant topper.

Nothing too fancy... But they were a hit!

Sex and the City 2

Today, we made a variation of our divalicious cupcakes from a couple of weeks ago for an order to celebrate a woman's birthday.
Her friend, who placed the order, said they were celebrating by going to see Sex and the City 2.
Being well versed in the ways of Carrie Bradshaw, Joanne knew instantly that these little treats would suit the theme perfectly.

So, we made the zebra print cupcakes and on top of each, we sculpted different purses. There are clutches, bags, even a briefcase-like bag. And, for the birthday girl, whose name begins with the letter "L" we sculpted a little stilleto and placed it next to a funky "L".

The cupcakes are a delicious, moist vanilla cake with a dollop of vanilla icing below the fondant, to keep it all together.

We look forward to hearing if the birthday girl liked them!

Sorry for the crappy pics.. !

Summer Blossoms

This cake came as a result of a client seeing our previous cakes and picking our Spring Blossom cake we donated for an MS Fundraiser, last month, as the look he wanted to treat his wife.

We went with a three-layer, moist chocolate cake and vanilla buttercream with fresh raspberries between the layers. Since it's now sunnier and brighter out, we decided to liven up the colours, too. Joanne tried a new quilting technique that she had not tried, yet, and loves the look, but wants to improve, still.

He picks it up tonight and we can't wait to hear if his wife likes it!

Car Cake

One of Joanne's co-workers has a son who just turned 13. For his party, his mom wanted a cake that he would really like; something that suited him. So, she decided to go for a cake with his favourite car: the Lamborghini Gallardo.

We took the picture of the car and added the number 13 onto its door to make it look like a race car. Then, we printed it onto rice paper so that we could place it onto the cake.

The cake is a moist, two-layer chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream - yup, it's got the word 'butter' twice, which just means it's delicious. We then covered it with black fondant (now one of Joanne's favourites!) and some flames in orange, yellow and yellow/orange marble fondant.

Here's what we heard back:
"The cake was a great success with my family and our son's friends.....the boys especially liked the "cool car" and "flames". They kept asking where did your Mother get that cake, was it Sobeys or Superstore? Of course the adults said it must have come from a specialty bakery.....
It was hard to convince everyone to cut the cake but once they tasted the wonderful flavour and since I did not tell anyone about the tasty peanut butter filling they were very glad to have cut into the cake and even have seconds. The combination of chocolate and peanut butter flavours were a big hit with everyone. Also, the adults were very pleased that the taste of "black" fondant was so nice. I myself wondered if it would be strong like licorice but it was just perfect!!
Thanks again to both of you for such a wonderful cake

Divalicious

Last week was a busy one! On top of the spring cupcakes, we also had a cake and cupcake combination order to do. It was for the 7th birthday of a little girl and her party was being held at Sharkey's Cuts for Kids, in Bedford. The girls would be pampered with hair and nails in a fun little private room. When I heard about the diva treatment the girls would receive, I proposed a zebra print cake with pink highlights. What I didn't anticipate was that when I googled the location, I would find a photo of the manicure room; painted pink with zebra print ottomans!

Despite a bit of confusion with the date, we managed to get the cake there, but weren't able to get a good photo of the finished product. All we have is this photo that we took from the car on the way over!

The cake is a chocolate red velvet and the cupcakes are from the same batch as the previously posted spring cupcakes - chocolate and white cake with white chocolate chunk. The icing we used was a vanilla buttercream. To give the cupcakes a little extra pizzaz, we baked them in pink foil cupcake holders.

Spring Cupcakes

Last week, we were asked to make two dozen cupcakes for a spring staff party. They wanted a batch of chocolate and another batch of something else, but they weren't sure what. We decided to go for a white cake cupcake with chunks of white chocolate. All of the cupcakes were topped with vanilla buttercream and a fondant flower.

Art Gallery Pressure

So this weekend, we were asked to put together a cake for a friend of ours, James, who is turning 40. James' favourite colours are red and black and the venue for the party was the Dal Art Gallery. This got us thinking.. we want the cake to look funky and artsy and like it fits in with the setting, but holy pressure!

We decided to run with it and make a red velvet, two-tiered cake covered in black fondant. Then, we added some funky accents in red and white. The design is kind of retro chic, and we think it suited the birthday boy.

We also made some white fondant tiles with "Happy 40th James" cut out and placed them with the cake, on the black platter.
The party was a hit, we're really happy with the cake and Dawn, his beautiful fiancée threw a fantastic party!
